Some Great Resources To Use

It can be challenging to find resources to use when teaching Canadian History, so here are some to start.


Historica

This website contains many different resources to use. For example, the complete collection of Heritage Minutes, a large collection of lesson plans to use, and even more. This is a website that should be used by all teachers, especially those who wish to make history come alive.

The Ontario Archives

This is an excellent site to go for resources that contains actual primary documents and sources that connects directly to Ontario and Canadian history. Offering those in education lesson plans, workshops for students both onsite and travelling to teach excellent lessons and activities, and also profession development for teachers.

Great Unsolved Mysteries in Canadian History

This resource to go to offers an exciting area to teach to get students interested in learning Canadian History. It contains lessons, printable such as poster and documents, and guides to use to help you get your students to develop historical thinking skills, that connects directly with the key concepts of historical thinking.

The Historical Thinking Project

This is the resource that started the historical thinking movement and powers teachers to develop their students historical thinking. This is a site to use to learn about historical think, but also to connect with that contains a large collection of lessons to use to teach all grades.

The Canadian War Museum

This is a excellent resource to use when teaching students about World War One and Two. Containing resources for both teachers and students to use. Many of the resources are those that gets students to use the computer and interact with the information, allowing them read and view different pieces of history and toolkits developed to allow students to learn a great range of information about Canada at war.

This is a great resource that offers lesson plans, resources, and more. Offering material to use all across Canada and the curriculum that can be used from elementary to secondary education.  Including a list of even more resources to use to help you teach Canadian History.

Canada's People

This website offers a large amount of different resources, such as games, teacher resources and videos to use. It can be  used for all grades. It allows you to look at the additional information that is told in the videos in this websites video series collection. A great resource to allow students to look at about important people and events in Canadian history.

Canada in the Making

This websites offer a large number of lessons to do that naturally promote historical thinking. Lessons on early settlers, immigration and the constitution/government. Lessons great for high school, but a few great for grade 3 and 6 too.

The Learning Centre

This is a collection of resources collected by Collections Canada for teachers to use in their teaching. Many of them look very interesting!  This is a pdf that you can print and hold onto in your history lesson binder to use a quick resource to go to. It tells you the different areas that these resources can be used for.

Canadian Museum for History

This is a great resource to use for all grades too. It allows for interactive learning to occur and can promote using the computer to learn history too. Lots of great resources for outside of Canada, such as Ancient Civilizations that is taught in Grade 4/5.  It also allows students to learn about Quebec too, which can allow students to learn more about Canada, instead of a focus upon Ontario.

A Guide to Women in Canadian History

This is a great resource to use to allow students to learn about the women in Canadian history and their roles they had. Women, like immigrants, and others are usually  thought about when teaching Canadian History in general. There are lesson plans, online resources, and  books to look at too.
